[Kenwood] Help with TM-V7A and TM-G707A PC Programming

I bought a programming cable for the Kenwood TM-V7 and TM-G707on eBay from
Affordable Radio of Ontario Canada. It is supposed to be a PG-4S with a
TTL- to - RS-232C converter build-in for direct connect to computer; no
other interface required.  

 

I downloaded and installed the Kenwood software and tried to read the
memory from a TM-V7A to the Mcp_v7.exe program.  I small window comes up
and it says reading data from the radio.  Then I get an error message
window that says "Communications Timeout Error". I know the cable is
connected to the radio since every time I try to read the memory the fan
comes on.  (Is that normal?)


I also tried to read the memory from a TM-G707 with Mcp_g707.exe and got
the same results.  Again the fan comes on when I try to read the memory
indicating that the cable is connected to the radio.   

 

Affordable Radio supplied a driver from Prolific Technologies and it is set
for the COM1 port to match the Kenwood software. Windows XP says the device
is working properly and no other devices are using COM1.  I lowered the
speed of the Transmit and Receive buffers in the Advanced Settings for COM1
in the Windows Device Manager because it said to set it slower to resolve
communications problems.  All settings provided the same results. 

 

If anyone has had experience using the USB PG4S and can offer advice I
would be appreciative.
