[Kenwood] TS930 auto ATU removal and now a 940 problem as well.

Thanks for all the replies, a good few were off list.

Everyone seems to say that the ATU can be removed without getting to the
underside. Hmm, maybe this one is different. Having been deep inside it now
it seems the only way to get at the ATU itself is to remove the screws
supporting the metal wrap around that houses the ATU. Inspection shows these
are screwed in from underneath. If there is a way to remove the ATU assembly
from its wrap around without first taking it off the chassis then I can't
figure that out (yet).

Maybe the later ones were different, this is an early 3 series radio and is
ex JA domestic market, 100 volt transformer, 50 watts on 10m etc.

All the usual stuff checks out, shaft couplers, tune power.

More investigation required but in the meantime I have to fix a 940 that
just got dumped on me. It has two faults, no drive on CW and synth going out
of lock below about 5MHz, (Is that a symptom of the hygroscopic wax?).

I have a 930 I am looking at for a friend. Radio is a fairly early unit and
has a problem with the auto ATU not stopping. The information I have points
to possible solder connection problems with the variable capacitors. Trying
to get at these to remake them but it seems that I will have to remove the
auto ATU to do so. Does this require removing the big board underneath or
can I get at it entirely from the top of the radio?
