I'm not familiar with the TS-480, but with any other transceivers I've used,
the ALC is directly proportional to the amount of microphone gain used.
Too much mic gain causes too much ALC and then a splattered, distorted
signal. In the case of a data port, there is most likely a menu setting to
control
the amount of signal gain to the radio's amplifier section.
That's why in the Operating Manuals for radios, the user is advised to keep
the mic gain down so that there is just a slight deflection of ALC.
