Yes! Your Kenwood TS-870 most certainly can use a 20A switching power supply. Just make sure the output voltage is 13.8vDC. I purchased a JTPS45 JETSTREAM 40A continuous, 45A surge switching power supply, which has an adjustable voltage control, a Voltmeter, and an Ampmeter from R&L Electronics, 1315 Maple Ave, HAMilton, Ohio 45011, 513-868-6399, 513-868-6574 Fax.  The first one I received from R&L the voltage fluctuated under no-load. I sent it back. The next one I received was rock solid. Now, it powers my TS-870, FT-990, an Alinco 50 watt 2m/440 transceiver and all the other little devices in the shack that require 12vDC. This switching power supply has a auto fan but it is not too objectionable in the shack. There is no evidence of noise from the switching power supply in any of the shack radios.
I know the JTPS45 JETSTREAM 40A was over kill but I was looking long range and versatility.

Folks: Does anybody know of an on-line manual for the 870?
Also I am wondering what type of Power Supply it requires, 
can I use a 20A swiching power supply?
