I don't have any experience with the TS-480, but before you do anything
to your rig, you might want to read and understand the following web
page on the TS-430:

(With special reference to the section on "Transmitter Coverage")
Bottom line: G3YNH claims that opening up the 430 to transmit below
1.6 Mhz and using it there can cause the PO section to self-destruct.
I have no further knowledge as to why this is the case, what happens,
or even if it works as G3YNH reports, but I'd want to find out before
I modified a 430, or for that matter, a 480.
