The original bulbs were clear with a green silicone rubber cover.  The 
covers can be rolled off and applied to new bulbs of a similar size.  
The originals  were also 10V.

There are many 12V bulbs available at Model Railroading or Hobby shops.  
12V bulbs will work, but they tend to leave a dark area in the center of 
the display and are a little dimmer than the originals.  On the other 
hand, they should last just about "forever" on 10V.

Some have used LEDs but they tend to "spotlight" at each end of the 
display.  Roughing up the plastic surface of the LEDs helps a little, 
but they don't have the sideways dispersion of a bulb.
