[Kenwood] Kenwood TS850S auto tuning problem on 40 and 80

Until recently my Kenwood TS850S would auto tune on all bands without any problems. Now this is history. It will auto tune rapidly and smoothly on 20 meters and above, but not on 40 and 80 meters. When in the Auto mode and the tuner turned on, the motors rotate, the swr meter pegs out on the high side, and the motors just keep turning. To complicate matters the problem is periodic and independent of the transceiver being cold or warm. Nor does it make any difference whether the carrier control is turned fully clockwise or not. I have visually checked the auto tuner board for bad soldiering and checked all screws. So far of no avail.
