[Kenwood] Kenwood SM-220 Help

I have a Kenwood SM-220

I cannot get the intensity of the line sharp.  

Note also when I turn Intensity and Focus on the adjustments I am not seeing any change.

The line will NOT go away as I turn everything fully counter clockwise.   Almost like the two controls are not working.
