John, there were major changes made to serial numbers above 310xxxx. A lot
of these were to address reliability issues ( poor circuit board
thru-plating etc. ). The power supply seems to be a bit of a time bomb. The
design relies far too heavily on the cooling fan. If the 28V power supply
series pass transistor fails, 41V DC is applied to the drivers and finals,
which are only 28V parts, obsolete and expensive to replace. Look up the
W6NL mods on Google. This will fill you in.
That having been said, the '930 is a lovely radio to use. Keep the power
down to 100W or less, learn to live with the cooling fan coming on often
(even during receive) and you should do well.
