Hmmm, being an earlier production '850, I would take a guess that the problem is with the DDS chips - but most reports of these failures show dots in the display, not a completely dead rig.  If the problem is with the DDS chips, Pacific Parts still lists them at $28 each (you'll need 4), but they're out of stock.  You can get more info about the DDS failures on N6TR's website:

No it just dead.  No lit screen and no audio noise etc

The '850's display has a tendency to not light up for up to 15 seconds after power-up - it's a random occurance that many have experienced.

However, even when the display is dark, the radio is still operational - there's audio from the speaker and everything works.  In your case, is the rig completely dead or is just the display dark?

Have a 20 million serial number TS 850 that will NOT turn on. 

When the on/off switch is pushed nothing comes up on the front of the rig. 

Any help trouble shooting appreciated.
