As important is what to do after you remove and clean up the damage.

1. Put a coin cell battery holder in its place.  The plastic holder tends to hold in any leakage.  OR
2. Stick a battery elsewhere in the radio and wire the leads to the battery spot.  It makes changing out the battery much easier.  If you use something like a DL123, it will last longer than the shelf life of the battery.
3. Get some Scotch tape and WRITE DOWN THE BATTERY CHANGE DATE in permanent marker and stick it on the back of the radio.  That way you can simply change out the battery in 5-7 years whether you need to or not and if you do #2, it will take very little time and effort.  The markings may look neater on the inside of the radio cover, but how often do you look at that?  Probably less often than the rear of the radio.
