[Kenwood] TS-870 SSB Output Power

Having a problem with a TS-870S/AT (s/n 20,xxx,xxx) that was donated to the 
Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club (SBARC).  No problem in selling it for $1,000, 
but the guy sent it back for a refund because of the low SSB output power.

In checking it out I saw that the CW output power was set right between 
100-110 watts, but on SSB could only get about 75 watts out.  And, yes, I tried 
different microphones, whistling into the mike, looking at peak power output, 
etc.

As it recall(?) both the TS-930 & TS-940 had a similar problem, but there 
were published fixes for the problem.

Is there a 'fix' for this problem, or a audio setup screen, or something else 
that I am missing ??
