[Kenwood] TS-520S and DC operation

Here's a question...   The TS-520S manual shows the pin out for the 
power plug for DC operation on page 15.  On page 24 in the section 
about mobile operation, it talks about using the DS-1A DC-DC 
converter.  What is the function of the DS-1A...is it a voltage 
regulator for less than stable auto DC systems?  Is it a necessary 
component for DC operations, or will the rig work FB from a stable DC 
supply without it?
