[Kenwood] TS 2000 Problem ?

 Please can anyone advise Me with this possible problem ??.

 An elderly friend of mine has just obtained a TS2000 and asked Me round to
help set it up. He explained even though the RX side was great He could get
no one to hear him. On checking the radio I quickly came to the conclusion
that there was no RF going out. 
 The Antenna is OK (SWR 1:1) but on turning on the onboard ATU and telling
it to tune it tx's for about a tenth of a second and then sends SWR in morse
 This I take to be an SWR warning sign. I then checked the antenna with an
external ATU and the radio tx'd OK.

 Do I presume that this is a fault with the on board ATU or am I missing
something obvious!!..

  Any ideas anyone Please!!..
