[Kenwood] Will TH-D7A work with Garmin Etrex Legend and Vista C and Cx GPS units?

Hi everyone,
I have a Garmin Etrex Legend and it works fine with my TH-D7A in my car and 
with APRS program UI VIEW-32 at home.  I would like to upgrade to either the 
Legend or Vista C or Cx units but I have been told it won't work because the 
C and Cx units do not use the NMEA 0183 interface. Is this true and if so is 
there any way around this problem ie a serial/USB converter or adaptor?

Would appreciate hearing from any of you who are knowledgable in this area.
