[Kenwood] TS450/690 and lithum battery

What happens when the Lithum battery dies in the
TS450/690?  The manual is kind of confusing in this
area. It says that an error message will appear
meaning it needs to be changed, but it also says that
only memory channel storage is affected.

Is the rig still operable with a dead battery? And how
hard is it to change the battery yourself?
