[Kenwood] This TS-930

Hi All,

My friend dropped the 930 off for my approval this morning.

First, this unit is a 309 series S/N, NOT a 304 as earlier reported (he 
misread the number).  Secondly, when I pulled the top cover off to examine 
the "innards", it has a sticker indicating that it was at the Kenwood 
Service Facility 5-2-96, so they probably took care of a lot of the original 
"issues" then.  At least I noticed that many of the "through-hole" points on 
the processor board have little wires poking through and have been 
"resoldered".

He didn't think it had the automatic tuner in it as he said it "didn't work" 
when he turned it on and pressed the mike key.  However, it DOES have the 
Automatic tuner as well as the 455-C1 CW filter installed.

Connecting an antenna and turning it on, everything came to life as it 
should.  Turned the AT on, set the switch to "tune" and pressed the mike 
key, and Voila!  The tuner came to life and tuned as it should.  Guess he 
didn't realize that the mode switch also needs to be put in the tune 
position for it to tune!

A brief radio check with the 40M West Coast "Noon time" net (which runs most 
of the day from 9:30AM on) got good audio reports and showed that everything 
seems to be working as it should. . .

The next thing I did was to take it down to the TV shop where I used to work 
and blow all the "stinky" dust out of it.  He doesn't smoke, but his 
daughter does.  Now all I need to do is to finish "de-stinking" it, clean 
the controls and switches, clean-lube the fans and put it back together.  I 
WON'T do any mods to it at all until I'm satisfied that all is working as it 
should be!

In any case it appears that it's a "keeper", ESPECIALLY for the price.  He 
gave me a good deal on my choice of radios because we're good friends and 
I've worked on a number of his sets in the past, always giving him 
"cut-rate" labor, and he knows I'll do it again in the future.

ONE QUESTION:  When I searched the web for mods and information for this 
set, I ran across one that gave some extensive "updates" for the power 
supply in particular, subbing 3 pin regulators for the resistors/zener etc. 
It showed the resistors to be in the Power supply fan housing.  HOWEVER, the 
only thing in this fan housing (either one) is the fan itself.  NO resistors 
etc., and no holes where terminal strips may have been mounted?  Is this a 
change that Kenwood did to the radio?
