Fellow Kenwood users: Thanks for all the advice on the TS940. While I was trying to find out the serial number, etc. about the unit, another ham who asked fewer questions of the owner got in ahead of me and got it for $500, yes $500 and it appeared mint, but I did want to do a little checking first..
