[Kenwood] F6A sensitivity outside of ham bands

I live in So. Cal. near LA  and we have a chanel 18  here. So I tuned
my F6 to 499.750.  although I can not understand a single word on the
broadcast (I won't even comment on the lack of English programing on
FCC licenesed public USA airwaves in the Los Angeles area)  it is Q5
copy.. So as a test I tuned my Yaesu FT60 to the same freq. and it is
about Q2 at best. Both radios are un-modified and have the stock
antennas.  They were placed with in 2 inches of each other and their
positions were swaped with no changes in recive signal quality or
level. Side by side the overall antenna height is about within 1/4
inch. I moved both radios about in the "shack" trying to improve the
signal on the FT60 but the F6 always had a better recive signal, by
far.

The F6 antenna seems to have a solid portion of the antenna near the
top, it may be a ferrite core, it seems t be about 3~4 inches long. Is
yours the same? I do not know for sure, but you may try the antenna
from the T81 as it  may be the most broad banded and see if it
improves your recive levels.
