[Kenwood] TS850 freq. Transmit changes for marine use

Marine, business band, FRS, etc. needs to be type accepted for the band of
operation.  A long time ago I wanted to modify a bunch of IC-2AT walkies for
use on the National Ski Patrol VHF frequency and was told in no uncertain
terms, in writing from the FCC, that it was not legal unless the devices
were type accepted for that use.

The Ham band radios do not require type acceptance to allow for home built
transmission equipment and because of the licensing tests that demonstrate
the knowledge to build and operate the equipment within the amateur rules.

I don't mean to contradict you because I am by no means an expert on this
issue but comparing a ham rig modified to marine to a ham rig modified to TX
on the CB band is like comparing apples to oranges. There are major
differences in the two. On thing the CB band is limited to 4 watts AM and 12
watts SSB and most convertable ham rigs can far exceed that. As for the
marine band I don't think they have the that low of a max regulated power. I
think it is much closer to the max ham rated power. I do know of many marine
nets that are conducted on the hams bands so they can't be that far off of
each other. I would have to see it in writing to believe it is illegal. But
this again is just my reconing and not known fact on my part.
