The 430, 440, and many VHF rigs of that era were notorious for bad solder
joints and grounding problems.  Later era rigs 850, 950 and VHF were VERY
reliable.

What about the notorious TS440 "all dots" death, and numerous reports of
cold solder joints on rigs of the same and later vintage?
