Nick -  this has been discussed for many years and there are many, many 
writeups to help you diagnose and fix the problem.  It is most likely 
one of your VCO's and either the potting compound has gone conductive 
or some cold solder joints have shown up.  I suggest you do a simple 
internet search on "440 dots" or something similar in Google or your 
favorite search engine to find some good material.  You may also join 
the Yahoo group dedicated to the TS-440 to find a whole lot of 
information regarding your problem.
