[Kenwood] comments on TS-2000

I can't answer all your questions but maybe I can give you some useful info
on the Kenwood TS-2000 since I won one. The TS-2000 is a great rig. I use
mine for SSB and digital (WL2K) communications. I also have a Yaesu
FT-1000MP MKV with all the optional discrete bandpass filters. Comparing the
two rigs I would say the receive side of the MKV is a tiny bit better. The
TS-2000 doesn't have optional filters of any type; as you pointed out, it
has DSP in both the IF and AF stages. I have found that the TS-2000 works
just fine for ARES Net activities; although I haven't been net controller
very often.

I have found that the notch filter and the DSP of the TS-2000 work very
will. The notch filter works better in the auto mode then it does in the
manual mode. In the manual mode you can only notch out one interfering
carrier, where in the auto mode more then one interfering signal can be
cancelled out.

AS for the digital modes you can't beat the Kenwood TS-2000. The TS-2000 is
by far the finest rig available on the market today for working the digital
modes. I use mine for Winlink 2000 and it's a natural. If you plan on doing
a lot of work with the digital modes I would highly recommend that you get
the TS-2000. If you are planning on a lot of DX work I would recommend the
Yaesu Field or the MKV with the optional filters. The Yaesu's are much
better working split and I don't like the split band operation of the
TS-2000 at all.

I would say the Kenwood TS-2000 is your best tradeoff and for the money you
can't ask for a better rig. I like mine so much that I am planning on
purchasing another TS-2000 and installing it permanently in a Ford
Expedition for mobile operation using both SSB and WL2K when the wife and I
go on vacation. I can keep in touch with friends and family this way.

I'm thinking of buying the TS-2000 rig. I will be using it for HF use as a
net controller and some PSK. I was thinking of getting one of the other
highend TXers like the ft1000 field. But was told I would get the best bang
for the buck with this one.
My biggest concern would be the notch filter's and the dsp's. I see in the
brochure that it has both IF and AF dsp units. How well do they work on
QRM/QRN? It also say I don't need to buy any other filters, Is this true?
[sounds like the 756proo rigs] And how well do the notch/dsp filters work on
beat or tone noises? Can they be manually be turned to zero in on them? Can
this rig pull out the weak signals were there is a lot of noise on the band?
I sometimes work PSK. Can this rig do this say using hamscope through the
data cable on back of the rig?? Or do I still have to use a sound card?
Right now I'm using the 706MKIIG as base. Its good on TX, but the RX is
crap. What was I thinking.
