[Kenwood] Programming The TM-V7A

Has anyone used the PG-4S and Kenwood software for memory programming of
the TM-V7A with a laptop that only has USB serial ports?

Using the PG-4S, a DB25 to DB9 adapter, and a serial to USB adapter, a
pentium 4 laptop with XP Professional, COM ports 1 and 2 are invalid
even with all other serial devices disconnected. The serial to USB
adapter is the one that came with the kit to program my IC-W32A HT. It
seems that the USB adapter will only present COM7, the one used for the
IC-W32A and will not accept COM port assignment from the Kenwood
software. Does this mean I need to disconnect all serial devices and
re-program the USB adapter with the IC-W32A software for COM 1 or 2
before using it for the TM-V7A?

Perhaps both the DB25 to DB9 adapters I picked up at the local swap are
not straight through adapters. Beginning to think so but not sure.

If anyone could throw me a line I would appreciate it.
