Ok, I am starting to figure this out. Using a dummy load, I am finding
that my drive knob is sticking. To adjust ALC, I am having to turn the
drive knob, which is very difficult to turn, all the way to one side or
the other. Once I do get max deflection, I find that the needle bleeds
off and doesn't stay in place. Even while adjusting carrier knob.
Sometimes it works for a while, others, I get one cq out and nothing.
Is the tight drive knob that does not maintain ALC a common problem?
Again, thank you for all your help. I love this rig and do not want to
have to return it.

TRY TUNING UP THE RIG THIS WAY.
Follow these steps EXACTLY.
1) Meter in ALC...mode in tune....send......peak the drive.(you may have
to
adjust carrier to keep it on the scale)
2) meter in ip......mode cw......send.......dip plate control. If not
enough current showing, or too much you need to adjust carrier now to
keep
it around 200 milliamps. (you can do this sending with the mic, or by
putting rig
in vox and using key......if key is plugged in, you must use key.)
3) meter in rf......mode cw......send(same as above re
key)..........alternately peak load and plate control....plate control
last.
4) switch meter to ip, and check plate currrent...adjust to 200 mils
or so
with carrier control.
All done. Very easy, but Kenwood manuals for 520/599/820/830/530/ all
had
it screwed up.
Remember, you can tune this rig up into just about ANY antenna....as
long as
you get a dip in the plate control, you are fine. I never use an
antenna
tuner with this rig as the pi network in the rig is a built in
tuner...AS
LONG AS YOU GET A DIP IN THE PLATE CONTROL, YOU ARE OK DONT SWEAT THE
SWR
IF YOU GET A DIP..
