G'day Robert,
I think this sounds like the classic problem that TS520S's have - i.e.
bad contact on the wiper of the VFO tuning capacitor. Apart from
vigorous swinging of the tuning dial to and fro to temporarily
improve the problem it's necessary to dismantle the VFO to get at the
capacitor inside the can and clean and lightly re-lubricate the wiper.
It worked in my case and my TS520S is once more as good as new in
that department. A service manual is helpful in getting it all apart.
