Get a copy of the service bulletin published by Kenwood regarding this
issue, it describes a good procedure. You don't have to replace parts as
they recommend if you are careful cleaning them. Pay attention to the
underside of transistors, for example.
I think the service bulletin is published under mods on eham.com, and/or
perhaps it is also on the Kenwood support page. At any rate, you should
readily locate it using a search engine.
If you have a digital camera, take pictures as you go along, particularly of
any plugs you disconnect. Put screws and removed parts in plastic
sandwitch bags and lay them out in the order you disassembled them.
I used a hot-glue gun to replace the material, and it has worked fine (at
least there has never been another problem). Upon reflection, though, I
wonder if that wasn't severe, and whether the set really needed any
stabalizing material in the VCO. Think it was needed only for mobile
installations.
Have fun, take each step slowly and you'll be delighted with the results.
Let us know how it goes! :-)
my 2 cents.....

Subject: [Kenwood] KW-440SAT all dots
I guess I got the PLL blues here, my 440 displays all dots. It
momentarily displays
freq. when setting or freq. changes are made but reverts to all dots! I
guess I'll
have to do the dissassemble and clean/resolder routine on the PLL. I've
never
been inside a 440 so is there a help page or anything to guide a first
stab at it??
Anyone want to play 'elmer' on tis one? I'm 70+ and getting slower than
molassas
up hill in winter, but willing to give it a shot. Any takers?
