[Kenwood] F-6A Programming Issue

I recently purchased a new F-6A along with the 9 pin PG-4Y interface cable.
I can not get my Toshiba laptop computer (a recent Satellite model running
Windows XP) to communicate with the F-6A.  I already manually programmed the
F-6A with several 2 meter and 440 mhz frequencies.  Every time I try to read
"ALL,
Memory or Menu" options using the available Kenwood MCP-F6/F7 software, I
obtain an error message stating "The Radio is Invalid.  Please Check and Try
Again".

I have verified there is no other hardware (i.e. mouse) connected to the
serial port and that the Com 1 port connections / settings are correct.  I
have also made sure the F-6A speaker mic jack is turned to PC.  The correct
software for the F-6A was selected when first loaded onto the computer.

While I doubt it, there may be software or my 56K modem running in the
background on the Com 1 port.  Any ideas anyone may have on how to check out
Com 1 port or any
recommendations to get this issue resolved would be greatly appreciated.
