I just purchased a VFO-240 to go with my TS-530S. The seller claims it
was working fine for him on his 830 (or 820 not sure), and I'm pretty
confident he is trustworthy.

I do not have a manual for the 240, and along with that the case was
damaged in shipping (the front face on the 240 supports all the innards,
and the cheap plastic tabs that mount the face to the case all sheared
off).

This thing was insured for shipping (USPS) so it's probably a moot point
when they handle the claim (I don't see any way to repair the physical
damage), but I'm curious if this thing is working.

It came with a straight thru DIN cable for connecting to the radio. Not
sure if it the original cable but it looks factory made and it checks
good.

I've never used a remote VFO, so I'm working in the dark here - please
don't yell if I sound dumb.

When I plug in the connecting cable to the radio, I immediately lose all
signal and audio on the 530. This happens whether the VFO-240 is
connected on the other end of the cable or not. I hear a click when I
plug in the cable - I can see RL-1 closing.

If the VFO is plugged in, the 530s' digital display seems to track with
the dial position on the VFO if the VFO function switch is in the RMT
position, so I *think* that tells me the VFO is working..?

So basically, if I plug in the interconnect cable to the radio, I lose
all signal and audio.

Any clues as to what I am doing wrong, or what the problem could be?
