Probably because no one ever lubricated the switch detents, bushings,
and contacts and the knobs split from the extra torque. Use a dab of
white lubriplate on the detent wheel, a drop of sewing machine oil on
the shaft bushing, and DeOxit (a quarter drop at a time with the dropper
bottle on each contact, don't spray) for the contacts.
