[Kenwood] TS940 fan lubrication question

Roy,

I got one useful response.  Probably people don't lube their fans or else 
they thought it was so simple I shouldn't have to ask -- hi hi.  Anyway, 
the suggestion I got was to use Labelle light machine oil -- the type used 
to oil HO model trains.  It is generally available at hobby stores that 
have trains and cars and such.  Unfortunately, hurricane Isabel hit here 
and messed up my life a bit.  There wasn't an opportunity to get to a hobby 
shop, and since having no TV or telephones gave me some operating time, I 
just had to forge ahead with what was on hand.  I used some light machine 
oil from True Value, and although it didn't have an nice applicator, it 
worked.  I do plan to buy some Labelle oil for next time.

The info I was seeking about accessing the fans didn't turn up, but the fan 
on the power supply is easy to get to.  Just remove the screws (the ones on 
the sides, not the top and bottom) holding the cover on the back of the rig 
and then loosen the set screw on the fan blades.  Take off the blades and 
put a drop of oil on the shaft where it enters the motor.  Before doing 
that, I cleaned up some old gummy stuff that was on the shaft.  The other 
fan is harder.  Take the covers off the rig.  There is a metal grate 
covering the antenna tuner.  It is easy to remove.  From there, you can get 
to the fan and remove the blades partially, allowing you to get to the 
critical part of the shaft.  This is where a good applicator will really 
help.  Lube the shaft the same way you did for the other fan, and that is 
it.  The fans really quiet down -- from annoyance to barely audible.
