[Kenwood] TS930 SSB Umph

I've read this before, can't remember where just now. I have a 930 and
it does much the same. I have a p.e.p wattmeter, calibrated. I have
several other radios that do not do what the 930 does. My service
monitor, Marconi/IFR 2945A, has a transient analyser. Together all of
these bits and pieces lead me to believe that the 930 does indeed suffer
from a little less power on ssb than on a carrier output alone. Yours
does seem harsh at 50 watts, mine shows about 85. The service manual
suggests carrier power in CW mode should be set to 110 watts, there is a
note too, not to exceed 125 watts.

My guess is that the ALC is less than an optimum design. Would be
interested if anybody has examined this to see if it really is doing the
job right. There have been mods for the 940 ALC, I need to compare the
two circuits to see if they are the same. What's the betting?

I still don't get the power issue with the 930 and 940. Both radios spec
the final input at 250 watts. If at this input power it can produce no
more than 125 watts output that is 50% efficient, I think. Doesn't seem
much compared to other similar radios. The Yaesu, can I say that word
here!, FT1000, a 200 watt radio, uses the same devices in the same
circuit design. I haven't heard of any 1000 owners frightened to run
their radios at full output. In fact many seem to indicate that the
extra 100 watts is a real benefit, far more than the numbers alone would
suggest. I'm not sure that the 1000 suffers from considerably worse
distortion products either.

After running the ARRL WWSSB contest a few weekends ago, is there any
way 
other than an amp that I can increase the output on SSB? I get 125 watts
on 
CW but voice peaks on SSB were only 50 to 60 watts.
