Jerry,
Ya know, I got to thinking. My D-104 was a formerly-amplified mic, with
the amplifier taken out of the circuit. Maybe over the years they changed
the element somewhat when they went to the amplified version?

Also, I agree with your quoted statement, to a point. I believe there is
no point in using an expensive mic that passes 20 kHz on a ham rig, or in
using a "professional" equalizer on your radio that will only pass 2700
Hz. But within the transmit passband of the rig, there is considerable
difference in transmitted sound if you boost or attenuate certain
frequencies. 

In my experience Kenwood rigs are very forgiving of the microphone. You
have to almost work at it to make them sound bad.
