[Kenwood] F6A rubber duck-broken?

Well finally took the plunge, and the Kenwood F6A HT
showed up this evening-a day late, but that's UPS for
you.  Hooked it all up and it worked great-for a
couple of hours.  Then tried it out, and it wouldn't
receive the local repeater, wouldn't bring up the
repeaters, etc.  Luckily I had a spare 18 inch dual
band SMA antenna handy which worked fine.

However, I am really surprised that a rubber duck
could die so quickly.  Has anyone else ever had this
happen?  WOrked fine, I did nothing to it, but now it
no longer works.  To top it off, this was a demo unit,
and when I looked at the antenna, it said "Icom". 
Should have no problem getting the dealer to send a
correct replacement, but as I said, I have never seen
a rubber duck die before, much less in a couple of
hours.  Anyone else have a similar experience?

To answer the earlier question I posted, the HT seems
pretty deaf on 6 meter SSB, but again, that could have
been due to the antenna problem.  Need to try out the
17 inch whip with a band opening.
