[Kenwood] TS-950SDX ATU Squeal

Hello Group...
    I have a TS-950SDX in which the antenna tuner, when activated, =
squeals like a stuck pig. This occurs when the radio is first turned on. =
It sounds like metal scraping on metal. However, after the radio has =
been on for a while, say 1/2 to 1 hr., the squeal no longer occurs and =
there is just the usual slight whirr of the ATU operating. Obviously, =
something warming up.
    I wonder if anyone has experienced this and could suggest a =
remedy/cause.
Any ideas?
