Mike, I'm not an expert, and can only relate to my personal
experience with the TL-922. To me, this looks normal, as is
borne out with your experiment with two different amplifiers.

The "dip" is practically non-existent on the low bands. Is this bad?
I don't think so, and probably there will be a few real experts who can
tell us exactly why this is so. Probably has something to do with the
way the tank circuitry is designed.

I have never tuned my '922 by looking for the hard to see "dip". Instead,
I use a peak-reading wattmeter and tune for maximum power, which
not coincidentally occurs at the resonant point, or "dip". If you tune a
grounded grid amp for maximum power out, that is sufficient.

In my set-up I have a TS-940S/AT the TL-922A, an SW-2000 meter and
a SM-220 monitor scope. I use the two-tone generator in the scope to allow
me to tune for maximum power without stressing the amp too much. By bringing
the two-tone output into the phone patch in jack on the 940, I don't have to
change any cabling This works very well.

I get full power out, about 1.4kw on 40, 80, and 160 meters, all without
seeing a significant dip.
