I had a similar problem with a 940 I resurrected and replacing the battery
in the display brought it back to life!

Subject: [Kenwood] ts 940 sub display
Anyone had experience with the subdisplay of a TS 940s . After years of
perfect operation this one is scrambled. The reset button fixes the
problem for a few days then the same problem returns. During the problem
the clock, graph and scroll are not readable and the freq. digital voice
will also not work.
Any help is appreciated.
