  The PROMS are still available, but there are better PROMS to use than the factory ones.
With the factory proms, you also needed the factory (Kenwood) programmer. This is better.
I had a couple of 601's here over the last couple of years. An Elmer here helped me decode
what we needed to do. You need 74s188 PROMS and a reader/burner for those. The info
is in 2 2-byte nybbles on M1 and M2. Trying to remember which one is the MSB and which
is the LSB. On location 00, pulling numbers out of a hat here, M1 will read, oh, say, "5B",
and M2 will read "E7", for a 4-byte word of 5BE7. Convert to decimal and add 10.7 for
the IF. I think. It's been a while since I did this. But, I think I still have two wire-wrap
sockets that, when properly inserted, generates a simplex of 52.525 on Channel 1 only.
I just found them. I'll see if I can take a couple of pics of them and show you...

  Oh, then you need to worry about adjusting the VCXO, I think 4 volts will get you
in the ballpark. Then you're set. No, I don't have the manual. Sold it along with the
last 601, can't remember offhand who to, but they are, or were, here...
