I just went out to the shack and checked mine. I can pull it out away from
the radio about 1/16-1/32".

Does yours work properly electrically? That would be the key for me. A
little mechanical tolerance would not be a real problem as long as the thing
tunes properly. It does not sound like you have a real problem, based on
what you wrote.

I've never heard of a NB mod like you describe.
