I've had extremely mixed results with USB->RS232 converters in my work
with hand-held data terminals.  Usually one or two programs work and the
rest don't (and the ones which do work vary by converter brand/model).
They are quite a bit more complicated than a simple wiring adapter.

A better solution for a laptop would be a PCMCIA serial port card.
