Hello from a newbie greenkeyer.  I can't help much with your question 
because I have no experience (well almost none) yet with computers and tty.

Here is my hint at what to focus on:  There is a difference between running 
a radio in FSK mode where the information is fed to the radio as digital 
keying (via RS-232) and running a radio in SSB mode with *audio* input to 
the mike or other audio input line ("AFSK").  Make sure you are not trying 
to do part of each.  I have a TS-940 here but have not yet worked out how I 
can run teletype in either mode.
