[Kenwood] Antenna tuner problem in TS-570

I am posting this request for assistance for a friend who has an 
older TS-570.

He got the rig used, and it worked properly at first, then it lost 
its ability to remember frequencies. He replaced the internal battery
and now the TS-570 no longer tunes automatically. Sometimes it would 
tune and then did not tune. The rig was put aside for two months, and
now when it tries to tune it simply chatters. The memories do hold 
frequencies, though. 

The owner says that he reset the radio, but I am not certain that 
this was done properly.

Any troubleshooting hints or cures are greatly appreciated. This 
radio is on St. Helena Island, so it will help a DX target get back 
on the air.

If this is an internal battery problem, is there a known larger-
capacity battery replacement or a proven way to steal power for 
memories and other functions?
