I'm no lawyer, but I have worked in sales and I think it's a matter of State
law.  If a company requires you to send in a warranty card in order to
validate it, then the warranty is void unless you do so - EXCEPT if there's
a local statute (law) to the contrary.

I know in California that proof of warranty is the sales receipt, not the
warranty card.  So long as you have the original sales receipt, the warranty
is in effect for that product if it is sold in California.  It doesn't
matter if you send in the card or not.  In fact, if you lose the receipt,
most companies won't even honor the warranty.

Warranty cards are often just demographic information collection devices.
Yes, the company will hide behind the "if there's a problem, we want to know
where to contact you" by-line, but the real reason is to sell your info to
some mailing list company.  If you notice, rarely does the address on the
warranty card match the address of the company.  Also, there are usually no
disclaimers on the card, so your info can be sold or shared without notice.
In fact, most companies try to entice you to send in the card by offering
some type of free "schwag" (e.g. extended warranty, prize drawing, etc).
For example, Nikon offers a 1-year standard warranty on some products...send
in the warranty card and it gets extended to 5-years (and the card goes to
some collection house in Colorado).

As far as "N'th" owner warranty coverage, that's up to the company.  For
most warranties I've seen, it's only valid to the first "end user", or the
first purchaser from an authorized sales rep.  Beyond that, the warranty is
null and void.

If one buys a piece of Kenwood gear used (but only a couple of months old) 
and the warranty card has not been filled out if one completes and submits 
that card may one receive warranty coverage or is only the original new 
purchaser covered no matter what?
