I too find it uncomfortable listening for very long on 17, but guess what, I
put up a loop for the band (and 12 meters). Soooo much quieter, and can dig
even the weakest signals out easily, even off the sides of the loops. Maybe
you can throw something up and try that. I had often heard loops were much
less prone to noise/static, and had for a short period of time, a quad as
SV0WPP. The loop is certainly worth it here. By the way, the top of my
loops(diamond shape) are at 30 feet, with the bottom about 10 feet off the
ground, on a single pole, with two cross pieces to spread the sides out. The
4x4 ten foot pole, with a 16 foot 2x4 and then a bamboo pole attached above
that. I nailed on a short cross piece at 6 feet off the ground. I can
rotate (strongarm method) the whole thing. Dropped down into a 2 foot deep
hole in the ground. Will shortly put a 2 foot plastic 6inch diameter pipe in
that hole and drop the whole shebang into that for better stability. 10
meters and 6 meters also tunes from both rigs(TS570 - IC706) built in tuners,
but 20 doesnt. Just somelthing to play with, along with the other 12-15
antennas out there at any given moment. HI
