I had the same problem (...... in the display) on my 9 year old R-5000. This
has nothing to do with the battery.
This is the PLL unlocking. Meaning that your radio thinks you are turning
the dial (unlock) even if you are not. This problem occurs because moisture
has got into a goo like substance that Kenwood puts on their PLL circuit
board. Kenwood describes this problem in a technical service bulletin for
the TS-440 (applicable to the R-5000).
To repair, you have to remove the PLL circuit board from the, remove the goo
from the cicuit board, replace two transistors and one diode with new parts.
Then you have to realign the radio with a VOM. I did this repair to my
R-5000 and haven't had any problems since.
