[Kenwood] 940 Question

I have a weird problem.  I think I know the cause but I am not 100%
sure.  The other day when I turned on my rig it sounded like I was in AM
tuned to a load SSB signal if that makes sense.  I couldn't copy it and
it was pegging my 'S' Meter.  It was just garbage.  I looked and I was
in USB so I didn't understand.  I checked my SWR's and it was higer than
normal.  So just for grins I hooked my manual antenna tuner up and tuned
the antenna with it and it sounded and acted normal.  I am sure it is
something with my antenna changed but has any else ever expierenced
this?  It is still doing it so I have just been using my external tuner
and all is well.  I am going to change out my antenna this weekend with
something else (I am not sure yet still planning.)  Currently I have up
a G5RV that has been patched several times due to a tree falling on it.
