[Kenwood] VFO-230 and VFO-240 (Long)

The VFO-240 is analog with a VFO like the one in the TS-830S, TS-530S, and TS-530SP (perhaps others as well). The VFO-230 is digital and also has a front panel digital readout. The VFO-230 is self powered (runs off its own internal AC power supply while the VFO-240 takes its power from the host. I suspect that the VFO-230 is much more stable but as you may know, the VFO's in the TS-830 and TS-530 did a fine job as did the VFO-240.

While the VFO-240 was intended for use with the TS-530S and TS-530SP the VFO-230 was intended for the TS-830S. That is evident in the way the tuning dial background looked. The TS-530 radios has an analog dial around the main tuning knob that was white (translucent) with black lettering -- and that is the way the VFO-240 looks. The TS-830S had a similar dial around its tuning knob with a black background and white (translucent) lettering. The VFO-230 has no analog readout around the tuning knob (because of the digital readout, I guess) but is blacked out in that area to better match the TS-830S.

The VFO-230 has five memories that are kept up as long as the VFO is plugged into AC.

One interesting thing is that the VFO-230 seems to come with reverse tuning to the transceivers. At least every one I have seen is that way. On the other hand, this is easily reversed with an internal connector swap. I don't actually know that Kenwood shipped them that way -- just a fact that every one I have seen has been that way. I believe Clif Avvid described the connector change in a message some weeks ago.

I use a VFO-240 with a TS-530SP and a VFO-230 with a TS-830S. And, I like them both.
