[Kenwood] TS 930s cooling fan/KA1YPK

Larry, I have a TS940s and had the same heat concerns.
The way that I addressed it on my rig was to install a small
computer muffin fan on the outside of the heat sink housing, without
drilling any holes and I left the rig fan as it was.
I picked up a small 12vdc muffin fan measuring diagonally to the mounting
holes about 3". I picked this up at a Ham/Computer swap (Think Radio Shack
has them) along with a small ceramic magnet that is mounted on a small metal
bracket with pre-drilled holes.
Mounted the magnet in one corner of the fan and put a screw in the mounting
hole diagonally across from it. Flip the fan over so the fan sits on the
magnet adjust the screw so the fan sits level and crank both nuts tight to
lock the leveling screw in place.
These types of magnets are very strong for there small size and the fan does
not move  in fact it is quite hard to remove or move the fan around once it
is on the rig heat sink housing.
I also picked up a matching shield for the fan to protect fingers.
If the fan speed is too fast you can put some el-cheapo silicon diodes in
series with the positive lead and take advantage of the forward voltage drop
to slow the speed down.
This setup has been going for two years and the fan noise is just barely
heard, the rig fan has only come on a during hard operating or hot weather,
but even then seems to run a shorter length of time.
Oh don't use two magnets  like I did the combined magnetic fields of both
magnets will stop the motor in its tracks.
I guess running the rig fan constantly might be the best way to go, but I
figure that I have given a boost to the rig fan which just seems to barely
cool when it is needed with out hacking up the rig in anyway.
