[Kenwood] AM BC band on a TS-450S/AT

I recently acquired a used TS-450. I enjoy occassional
BC band listening and have noted that the 450 seems to
do a terrible job with it. Is this the norm, or does my rig
have a problem? My Zenith T/O setting on the desk with
its wavemagnet does a better job than the TS-450 and my
G5RV. I have even tried tying the center and shield
together on the HF antenna and using it like a long wire.
Any auggestions would be appreciated. Also, I have
noticed the same problem with the freq's below 550KHz.
I had a TS-430 several years ago that I could receive
several local airport NDB's on, but I hear nothing on the
TS-450 except garbage. TIA and 73,
