Hello George,

Congratulations on the SM-220 - it is a nice instrument.

When  looking at your own signal:
There are a couple of things you can do to "look at your own signal", from
looking at your RF output to examining your amplifier linearity.  I will assume
that you are referring to simply viewing your RF output.  The SM-220 is
inserted in the antenna feedline like an SWR meter would be.  Connect the
output of the TS-830 to the RF input SO-239, and connect your
antenna/tuner/etc. to the RF output SO-239.  Set the FUNCTION switch to
MONI/TRAP position.  Set the SWEEP RANGE to the 10-100 position, and the SWEEP
VARI control to about the 2 o'clock position.  Adjust the vertical and
horizontal controls, and the intensity and focus controls to obtain a clear,
sharp trace in the middle of the screen.  This should get you setup.

When you transmit, you should see the envelope of your transmitted signal.  A
CW signal just looks like a wide band.  A modulated SSB signal looks something
like the examples in Figure 5-6 on page 10 of the manual.  The shape of the
signal will vary with your voice/modulation.  You can see from these pictures
that a "flat-topping" of the peaks of the signal generally indicates that you
are overdriving and distorting.  If your signal on the screen is very small,
try decreasing the setting on the RF ATT control (towards MIN).  If the signal
on the screen is going past the top/bottom, then increase the RF ATT.

In order to view the receive signal, you must have the pan-adaptor.  This turns
the unit into a band-scope - kind of a mini-spectrum analyser that lets you see
band activity above and below your operating frequency.  I won't go into
details since you don't have the pan-adaptor.

I hope this gets you started.  If you have specific questions, please let me
know.  Maybe we could work out an on-air sked to walk you through it.
